Remember the '97 spelling bee episode with the kid who misheard "doyen" and then went on to misspell it?

His name was Cody. His placard number was 38.

Look at my username and do the math. :)

Ned vs. Cameron [07 Sep 2007|02:46pm]

Cheap Seats is still in the iTunes store. I was surprised too when I had a chance to get on an high speed connection and checked. I decided to spend a little money and get an iPod watchable copy of the 1994 Spelling Bee ep.

OK, is Cheap Seats gone for good now? www.Cheapseats.tv yields a Problem Loading Page error. I didn't see it being listed (even at 2:30 in the freakin morning) on ESPN Classic for the next few weeks.

This is depressing. I mean, there are shows I still haven't seen. Appearances of Beamy I haven't spit popcorn seeds at yet. MST was milked for like 4 years after it went off the air; the Sklars couldn't even last 4 months in repeats at the armpit timeslot they were relegated to? What is cheaper to run than a show they already owned and paid for? I'm betting the yule log costs more!

If they aren't going to offer the show, I'm hoping someone posts some episode torrents soon. Yes, I realize that iTunes has some episodes, but I'd rather take a shower with my toaster than install iTunes on my computer.

Petey The Plane! [31 Jan 2007|11:59pm]

I got this really weird comment in my (non LJ) blog:

Not only do I know Kevin Casey from the episode of Cheap Seats but he was my boss for three years.

Kevin Casey? There was no Cheap Seats mention of a Kevin Casey right? There was however a Kevin Casey (an actress -- I know wtf a woman named Kevin?) in the MST3K made fun of movie Skydivers.

Apparently a DVD is coming!! and a possible new show!! [29 Jan 2007|08:41pm]

I hadn't seen anyone post this, and can't vouch for it's accuracy, but deadspin.com posted a quicky interview with the sklars on January 23rd, posted as follows :

Occasionally, Deadspin associate editor Rick Chandler goes out and interviews people. Look! He talked to the Sklar Brothers!

Our own poll was frustratingly inconclusive on their comedic skills, but ESPN thinks enough of the Sklar brothers to be talking with them toward developing a new project with the network. Their previous show, "Cheap Seats," in which the brothers -- Randy and Jason -- played fictional tape librarians who mock network sports clips, was canceled last year after a three-year run on ESPN Classic.

"We miss the show, yeah," said Randy Sklar. "ESPN gave us a fantastic opportunity for which we're really grateful. It was the best process to be able to create a show and not have to go through 27 different filters to get it on the air. We just met with the producers there, pitched our idea and they're like, 'OK, let's do it.' Anyone who has worked with the studios in Hollywood, as we have, knows that that's really rare. Hollywood gives you so many ways to fail."

So what now? The Sklars can't go into detail about their new ESPN project except to say that it will probably be on ESPN-1, or "the mother ship," as they call it. Until then they wander the countryside, lost and a bit confused, knowing that there are sports stories ripe for mocking for which they have no outlet.

"Every time we see a spelling bee, it makes us sad," said Jason of the former Cheap Seats staple. "And of course professional wrestling. And we really never got around to Barbaro. The people who write him letters, just strange. I just kind of wish that people had the same compassion for people in wars that they have for a horse. Granted, I love animals, but let's get real."

"I've always wanted to see a Barbaro episode of Grey's Anatomy," Randy said. " 'Fuck you, Barbaro! I'm in operating room one!' 'Dr. Wilson wants that horse out of this hospital!' 'No! There'll be letters! Those Barbaro fans are crazy!' 'We've got to save that hoof, Dr. O'Malley!' My God, it's laminitis! We want operating room one, goddamn it!'

"I think that would be great."

The Sklars are also working on a Cheap Seats DVD which should be in stores in the near future. Barbaro, meanwhile, was beaten by Invasor for 3-year-old Horse of the Year at the Eclipse Awards on Monday. Bastards.

Who Died? Continuity. [19 Jan 2007|12:17pm]

A few recent incidents that reminded me of Cheap Seats:

- Last week, my boss sent me an email with the subject line "Techne" (the name of a company we deal with) and I've had it in my in-box as a reminder to follow up on something. Everytime I saw that email, I'd think, "You know, technos! Or something!"

- Last weekend, I made screencaps of old commercials from a Simpsons tape we recorded in the fall of 1992. You know, back when everything was radical!, including commercials for Super Nintendo's Super Mario Cart. The whole commercial had radical! voiceovers, non sequiturs and graphics ("This game only has two speeds - fast and WAY TOO FAST!"), just like the Radical Outdoor Challenge episode.

- I watched a couple minutes of jumproping and double dutch on ESPN2 last weekend. There were a few boys competing, but none as dramatic as Jared.

I'm not 100% certain of this but...

A guy named Ned Andrews is on the NBC show "1 vs 100" and he looks an awful lot like Tennesee Ned Andrews from all the "klassic" Spelling Bee episodes.

Anyone else watching and able to confirm or deny this?

Technos Or Something! [26 Dec 2006|05:42pm]

I uploaded this last night -- 1995 Spelling Bee Part 1 Highlights.

It has the:
  • "Technos Or Something!" Boy

  • Rebeccca's top 5 celebrations

  • Jason & Randy getting voicemail [I think]

  • Rebecca trying to spell Erythema

  • It's only 5 minutes long b/c it was a chapter of a homemade DVD, that's why it cuts off all sudden.

"Cleaning Out The Closet" [15 Nov 2006|02:29pm]

It looks like ESPN Classic is showing the series finale of Cheap Seats (titled "Cleaning Out the Closet") a couple times next week:

    Sunday 11/19 - 7pm, 7:30pm (eastern)
    Monday 11/20 - 7:30pm (eastern)

(My online TV schedule lists the finale episode also on Monday Nov 20th and Thursday Nov 23 at 11:30pm, but ESPN's schedule list those two times as TBD, so don't count on it...)

Also, don't forget about the finale-thon on Sunday November 19th, starting at 1pm (eastern)!

Edited: It looks like this is going to be the lineup for the episodes on Sunday -

Oh, and in last week's show (the arm wrestling) there was this quote:

It's the battle of the Billy's! Winner takes on Billy Ocean!

Which made me think of this link.

Oh, does anybody have the Kelly Rapp (Rap) as an mp3?
